You want to give up but times you’ve tried before, you’ve always ended up with a splitting headache that feels like a vice grinding your head by the end of the day. Trust me I know, I’ve been there before too.

So is it even possible to give up coffee without this happening?

The answer is YES, I’ve done it myself and got through the whole entire day without any headache at all, just a bit of a cloudy head here and there, but no vice, thank goodness :)

So I’ll share the exact process I used and you can try it too.

You’ll need an arsenal of tools to help your body cope with the withdrawal and detox.

Tools of the trade:

The routine

When you wake up in the morning the first thing you need to do is have a small glass of water with a teaspoon of vitamin C powder. Follow it with another glass of water.

Next boil the kettle and have 2 cups of strong, black dandelion root tea.

Fill up a BIG bottle of water (approximately 2 litres), add 2 teaspoons vitamin C powder and 2 teaspoons magnesium powder.

You’ll want to make sure you drink plenty of the water throughout the day, as much as you can to help support the detox withdrawal. If you need more, fill up another bottle and make sure you add your vitamin C and magnesium to the mix.

Go about your morning as usual, don’t let yourself get too hungry and keep drinking that water.

After lunch have another small glass of water with a teaspoon of vitamin C powder. Follow this with a strong, black cup of dandelion tea.

Keep going about your day, making sure you keep drinking water.

Do the same at dinner with the vitamin C, skip the dandelion and just keep drinking water.

That’s basically it but I’ll explain a few more tips and the reasons why I think this method works so well.

The Madness Behind the Method

Caffeine is a stimulant that affects our adrenal glands and releases our stress hormone, cortisol. The adrenal glands harbour most of our body’s stores of vitamin C so when you add additonal stress to the body, your vitamin C stores will become depleted very quickly. So boosting up the vitamin C is going to assist the body to cope with the stress of the detox from caffeine. So as you can see from the above routine, we are flushing the body with vitamin C throughout the day.

Magnesium is a natural relaxant of the muscles and nervous system so this helps to keep us calm and centred during the process. Magnesium also supports over 300 enzyme reactions in the body and some of these are involved in the detox process so you are giving your body some extra fuel for metabolic function.

Dandelion root tea is an amazing herb for aiding the liver to detox, so by having it in the morning you are stimulating the livers natural detoxification processes, ready to get it into action for working on ridding the caffeine from your body. It also increases bile production, which is great way to boost the elimination of toxins from the body. It contains calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, and vitamins B and C, and it  helps purify the blood as well. Dandelion is a fantastic herb to use for any type of detox :)

Water is needed to flush all the toxins out of the body as fast as possible, which is why we drink so much of it throughout the day. Better that than circulating in your blood and giving you a headache like a vice, right?

Mix all of these things together and you have a great recipe for stopping coffee without getting headaches!

 

TIP: Just one additional thing, if you feel like your head is starting to get cloudy or you sense a slight headache coming on, take an extra dose of vitamin C and drink more water. It should pass within 15-20 minutes. It’s also important to point out again that you need to keep your water intake high throughout the day. If you allow yourself to dehydrate, you WILL get a headache, and once it gets a hold of you it’s more difficult to get rid of it.

    Are we supposed to do this routine for several days after quitting coffee or is it just on the first day? Thanks!

    Daily limit for Vitamin C is 2000 mg. You suggest 5 teaspoons, which puts one over that and can cause stomach cramping, diarrhea.

      Hi Madalyn, Your concern is warranted and you’re right that this amount of vitamin C does push one to the upper limit.

      However, the body uses up copious amounts of vitamin C under extra stress and giving up coffee is a major stressor. On top of that this process includes PLENTY of water which will rapidly excrete excess vitamin C from the body. This method has worked for many and has never resulted in stomach cramps or diarrhea :)

      Hi Sandy, Don’t drink coffee!

      You want to try and have something that is caffeine free. Roasted dandelion root makes a great coffee substitute, or Rooibus tea, or you can take an herbal tea.
